The letters A.S.C. stand for Ambulatory Surgery Center. The word ambulatory means that you can move around freely without any assistance. In simple words, A.S.C. stands for a place you can walk into on your own accord, have surgery and walk back out without any help. Another name for an A.S.C. is an “outpatient surgery center”. This means that you will be going out or leaving the facility after your surgery is complete.
The majority of surgical procedures that are done in a hospital can be done in an A.S.C. When a patient has surgery in a hospital and stays in the hospital, they are classified as “inpatient.” “Inpatient” means that the patient stays in the hospital rather than “outpatient” where the patient goes out or leaves after the surgery.
Two popular advances in medicine have made outpatient procedures possible at an ASC. Improved anesthesia allows for a quicker recovery. Laparoscopic techniques, causing less trauma, allow for quicker healing.
Diagnostic and repair/corrective procedures in the ASC are scheduled for urology, ear nose and throat, orthopedic and gynecology. Many general surgery and cosmetic procedures are also accomplished in the ASC.
